How to Choose a Painting for Your Home Interior:
A Complete Guide by the Artist

1. Think About the Purpose of the Room
Each room has its own “energy.” A painting should reinforce it.

Choose expressive, statement pieces that attract attention.
Perfect: abstract works, textured palette knife paintings, large oil canvases.

Calmer colors, soft shapes, emotional or atmospheric scenes.

The most common issue people face is choosing a painting that is too small.
Here is the rule I always teach collectors:
Golden Formula
A painting or several paintings in a row should take up at least 60–70% of the width of the furniture under it (sofa, console, bed).
Examples:

• Sofa 200 cm → painting 120–140 cm
• Bed 160 cm → painting 100–120 cm
• Small wall section → vertical artwork 60–90 cm

3. Consider the Color Palette
The painting shouldn’t match your room perfectly - but it should harmonize.

Choose art that contains one color already present in your decor.

A neutral interior benefits from bold, colorful paintings.
3️⃣ Choose a painting that sets the palette

Avoid direct sunlight on oil paintings - it may affect long-term preservation.

• Romantic / cozy → warm palette, gentle forms
• Creative / inspiring → contrasts, unique compositions
