How to Choose a Painting for Your Home Interior:
A Complete Guide by the Artist

Choosing the right painting for your home is much more than matching colors to your walls. A painting sets the emotional tone of the room, becomes its focal point, and often transforms the entire atmosphere. As a professional artist and creator of OXYPOINT, I often help collectors choose artworks that perfectly match their interiors and in this guide, I’ll share all the essentials you need to know.
This article will help you choose art confidently, whether you're decorating your living room, bedroom, office, or choosing your very first original painting.

1. Think About the Purpose of the Room
Each room has its own “energy.” A painting should reinforce it.
Living room
Choose expressive, statement pieces that attract attention.
Perfect: abstract works, textured palette knife paintings, large oil canvases.
Bedroom
Calmer colors, soft shapes, emotional or atmospheric scenes.
Perfect: watercolors, soft landscapes, minimalistic abstractions.
Office or workspace
Art should energize or inspire.
Perfect: bold geometric abstractions, dynamic palette knife textures.

2. Choose the Right Size
The most common issue people face is choosing a painting that is too small.
Here is the rule I always teach collectors:
Golden Formula
A painting or several paintings in a row should take up at least 60–70% of the width of the furniture under it (sofa, console, bed).
Examples:
  • Sofa 200 cm → painting 120–140 cm
  • Bed 160 cm → painting 100–120 cm
  • Small wall section → vertical artwork 60–90 cm
✔ When a large painting works bestabove a sofa
  • above a bed
  • in the living room focal zone
  • on a wide blank wall
✔ When smaller works are appropriatecorridor
  • above desks
  • grouping multiple paintings in a gallery wall

3. Consider the Color Palette
The painting shouldn’t match your room perfectly - but it should harmonize.
✔ 3 easy strategies that always work:
1️⃣ Match one accent color
Choose art that contains one color already present in your decor.
2️⃣ Contrast the room
A neutral interior benefits from bold, colorful paintings.
3️⃣ Choose a painting that sets the palette
If the room is undecorated yet, let the artwork dictate the color scheme.

4. Choose a Style That Reflects Your Personality
As an artist, I always tell collectors:
the best style is the one that feels natural to you.
Popular options:
  • Abstract art: emotional, modern, stylish.
  • Palette knife paintings: bold textures, movement, energy.
  • Oil landscapes: classic, calming, timeless beauty.
  • Cityscapes: dynamic, inspiring mood.
  • Minimalist compositions: clean and elegant.

5. Think About Lighting
Good lighting can change everything.
✔ Best options:
  • natural light
  • warm LED spotlights
  • adjustable track lighting
Avoid direct sunlight on oil paintings - it may affect long-term preservation.

6. Consider the Mood You Want to Create
Every artwork carries emotional weight.
  • Dynamic / energetic → bold colors, expressive textures
  • Calm / meditative → smooth tones, soft transitions
  • Romantic / cozy → warm palette, gentle forms
  • Creative / inspiring → contrasts, unique compositions
Ask yourself:
How do I want to feel in this room?

7. Don’t Be Afraid to Start Small
Many of my collectors began with a single piece and over time, art became a passion.
I offer original paintings starting from €150 with free worldwide shipping, so you can begin your collection without stress.
Start with one artwork that resonates with you and the next one will come naturally.

8. Use Frames Properly
Frames can completely change how a painting looks.
If your interior is modern, choose thin minimalist frames.
If the room is classic, choose wooden or gold-toned frames.
Several of my paintings don’t require framing at all, they look perfect as they are.
A painting doesn’t have to “match” everything.
It should speak to you.
If you can’t stop thinking about a painting the next day- it’s yours.
Most Common Questions People Ask When Choosing Art
  • Q:
Should a painting match my furniture?
    A:
Not necessarily. It should harmonize, not copy.
  • Q:
What size painting is best for above a sofa?
    A:
If it is one painting, then 120-150 cm in width, or a group of several small paintings that together take up the same amount of space on the wall.
  • Q:
Is abstract art good for modern interiors?
    A:
Yes, abstracts work in 90% of contemporary spaces.
  • Q:
    Are large paintings risky?
    A:
Usually no, large artworks look luxurious and fill the wall better.
  • Q:
    Does lighting matter?
    A:
Yes. Good lighting can elevate even a simple piece.

Why Choose My Original Paintings?

My Paintings Are Stories Told with a Brush or a Palette Knife.
They carry energy poured into them with care and respect.
They are art that speaks.
  • Each Work Is an OriginalI don’t sell copies.
Every painting is created by hand, either as a one-of-a-kind piece or in a very limited series. This means you receive a unique artwork—one that no one else in the world owns.
  • Real Emotions in Every Brushstroke and Palette Knife
I paint not only with my eyes, but with my heart. Each piece is born from a deep inner response—inspired by nature, soul movement, or human stories. That’s why my works don’t just decorate your walls—they live and feel alongside you.
  • Art in Harmony with Space
I consider light, composition, proportions, and mood to ensure that each painting fits effortlessly and naturally into your space. Many of my clients say that their artwork feels as if it was created especially for their home.
  • The Texture and Depth of an Original
No print can truly replicate the texture of canvas, the layers of paint, or the subtle vibration of a handmade piece. Only an original painting allows you to feel a genuine connection with the art—one that’s alive, dimensional, and authentic.
  • A Personal Choice
You can request a painting tailored to your needs—whether in colors, size, or mood. I enjoy working in dialogue with my collectors to create the piece that becomes your personal story in art.
  • Meaning. Energy. Art.
My paintings are not chosen just with the eyes—they’re chosen with the heart. Because they carry the warmth of living art, created by one human being for another. And that’s something you can always feel.
Choosing art is both an art and a science. Think about style, size, color harmony, lighting, and—most importantly—how the piece makes you feel. When you connect emotionally with a painting, it transforms your home into a vibrant expression of your personality .
